Pastor's Message

By Rev Eric Tan

Covid-19 pandemic came in December 2019 uninvited, unwelcomed. Globally, everyone, every sector and strata of society is affected. The effect is unimaginable and many are still suffering.

During the lockdown in Malaysia, many types of activities were frozen. People took the time to take a step back to rethink, realign and recalibrate their lives, businesses and career. Things will not be the same again and people got to think creatively to stay afloat and thrive above the hopeless situations.

As for the church, we got to realign ourselves back to three important fundamental ministries which are, the ministry of the word, worship and witness. It is imperative that we grow stronger and stronger in these ministries.

The ministry of the word

Jesus gives us a life-changing revelation concerning the word of God. In being tempted by the devil in Matthew 4, Jesus told the devil that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

As food nourishes and sustains the body, so does the word of God. God’s word nourishes and sustains our entire being. Neglecting to feed on God’s word will cause our being to be famished, malnourished and weakened.

This is a good time to feed on God’s word through listening to sermons, studying the Bible in our Life Groups and doing our daily devotion.

The ministry of worship

Jesus was in a city in Samaria when He had a conversation with a Samaritan woman about worship. Jesus answered the woman and said in John 4:23-24 (NKJV), “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

We are no longer bound to a certain location to worship our Father. Yes, we will continue to meet in church to worship Him. But, right from where we are, we can reach out to God to worship Him.

Tough times may surround us but we can lift up our hearts, voices and hands to worship our Father in spirit and truth.

The ministry of witness

Jesus when He was about to ascend into heaven, He instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were baptised with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5). When the Holy Spirit came upon them, they shall receive power. With this power, they will be His witnesses and they will testify about Him in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8).

The Holy Spirit did come upon the disciples in Acts 2. Then they began to testify of Jesus with power and might.

Likewise, we have the Holy Spirit too. We have His power to testify of Jesus in our context and the sphere of influence we are in.

This is a good time, in the most difficult moments of life, in a hopeless situation of ours, to testify to our people the goodness and greatness of our Lord Jesus Christ. We know that Jesus heals, comforts and delivers. If we don’t witness to people about Jesus, they are deprived of the healing, comfort and deliverance.

As I conclude, in this challenging time of our lives, we will continue to live by God’s word, to worship our Father in spirit and truth and to witness to people about our Lord Jesus Christ.
